The Buddha says in the Dhammpada "Mind is the beginning of everything". This study represents the "Buddhist Psychology". This study is rooted, in Theravada tradition - the AbhiDharma (which is considered the 3rd basket besides the Vinaya and Sutttas baskets) and in Mahayana - the "Mind-Only school".
This studies how our mind works and the thought processes. How bad, neutral, good Karma are generated.
Master Thich-Nhat-Hanh explains them in easier to understand terms than studying the original scriptures.
Understanding how our mind works would greatly enhance your practice of the 4 right efforts and able to detect and steer early mental formations to avoid bad Karma volition/thoughts and support good Karma volition/thoughts.
